MPF Fund Expense Ratios (FER): How Much Do 0.58% and 2.0% Cost You Over 30 Years?

The MPFA's latest official data shows Fund Expense Ratios (FER) span 2.3 percentage points across Hong Kong's 451 MPF funds. A gap of 1.4 percentage points looks trivial on paper — but compounded over 30 years of contributions, it can quietly cost you over six hundred thousand dollars in retirement savings.

Fees Are an "Invisible Loss" Most People Never Check

When choosing MPF funds, most people only ask "which one has the higher return." But returns float — a fund that beats the market this year may lag next year. The Fund Expense Ratio (FER) is different: whether your fund makes money or loses money, the trustee's management fee, administration fee and custodian fee all come out of your balance every single year. Over decades of monthly contributions, this "invisible" cost can add up to far more than most people expect.

MPFA's Latest Data: Why Expense Ratios Vary So Much Across 451 Funds

According to the MPFA's official "MPF Fund Platform" data as of 31 August 2026, the 451 MPF constituent funds in Hong Kong carry an average FER of 1.34% — but the gap between the most expensive and the cheapest fund is 2.32 percentage points. The most expensive guaranteed fund charges 2.87928%, while the cheapest money market fund charges just 0.56050%. Breaking it down by category makes the spread clearer:

Fund CategoryNo. of FundsAverage FERHighestLowest
Equity Funds1691.46%2.03318%0.58317%
Mixed Asset Funds1911.28%1.79740%0.58185%

MPF Conservative Funds290.82%1.07379%0.66355%
Overall (451 funds)4511.34%2.87928%0.56050%

To be fair, there is good news too: since July 2007, the MPFA-tracked average FER has fallen by a cumulative 34.95%. As of 31 August 2026, 143 funds (32.1%) carry an FER of 1% or below, up from 123 funds (28.6%) at the end of 2023. Competition and the eMPF-enabled full portability regime are pushing fees down overall — but that "overall decline" doesn't mean the specific fund you hold is cheap. Funds within the same category can still differ by well over double.

How Much Does 1.4 Percentage Points Actually Cost? Run It Over 30 Years

A simplified example: assume a high earner with relevant income above $30,000/month, where both employer and employee each contribute the mandatory contribution cap (currently $1,500 each per month, or $3,000 combined — this cap has been in place since 1 June 2014, and the MPFA proposed raising it further in early 2026; see our other article for details). Assume contributions run for 20 or 30 years, with a hypothetical 6% annual gross return before fees (this is purely an illustrative assumption to demonstrate the impact of fees — not a return guarantee, and actual returns will fluctuate with markets):

PeriodFER 0.58% (Cheap)FER 2.0% (Expensive)Difference
20 years~$1,294,721~$1,100,324~$194,397
30 years~$2,699,949~$2,082,148~$617,801 (23% less)
A note: The figures above are a rough illustrative example based on combined monthly contributions of $3,000 and an assumed 6% annual gross return before fees. They are not a return guarantee and not personalised investment advice. Actual results depend on your contribution amount, contribution period, fund performance and market conditions.
